Amalapuram, January 23: Tension prevailed in Amalapuram town and its suburbs, as some miscreants desecrated the statues of Dr BR Ambedkar on Sunday night in Amalapuram and Amalapuram rural mandal.
The police, as a precautionary measure, imposed section 144 in the town for three days and deploying additional forces from Krishna and West Godavari districts, as a pre cautionery measure. Meanwhile, policepetrolling is intensified in trouble prone areas.Some unkonwn miscreants on Sunday night destroyed the statues of Dr BR Ambedkar in Bandavaripeta, Bodasakurru, Chindada Garuva, Rollapalem and Nallavantena.
This incident caused a stir among the members of SC community who came on the roads in large numbersdemanding the government to
identify the miscreants and punish them immediately.
Trafiic was stalled for hours together on national highway 215, Nallavantena, Erravantena, Idarapalli, Tower Clock and Y Junction due to rasta rokos organised by the agitators.
When agitators tried to forcifully close the shops it led to heated arguement bewteen traders and agitators. Agitators then hurled stones at shops to make the traders down the shutters.
The SC community is suspecting another communitys’ hand behind the desecration of Ambedkar statues.People of two communities staging dharna at clock tower centre leading to escalation of tension. The agitating people even defied the police advise to move away from the area.
East Godavari superintendent of police Trivikrama Varma rushed to Amalapuram and reviewing the situation. DIG of Eluru range G Suryaprakasa Rao also camped in the town.
Amalapuram deputy superintendent of police Sridhar, inspector Murali Krishna Reddy, sub-inspectors of Mummidivaram,
Razole, Amalapuram, Ravulapalem and scores of police men are moving around in the city.
Speaking to media persons, Amalapuram deputy superintendent of police Sridhar said that the two groups are staging dharnas a little away from each other and so far no attacks were reported.
As a pre-cautionery measure we are deploying additional forces in the trouble prone areas and the situation is under control, he added.
