The Devil's Tower


The Devil's Tower is monolithic igneous volcanic neck located in the Black Hills near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County , northeast ofWyoming , over the River Belle Fourche . Its height is 386 feet above theground and the top is at 1,558 feet above sea level . The Devil's Tower was the first National Monument declared the United States and was founded on September 24, 1906 , by President Theodore Roosevelt .
 

The extent of the monument encompasses an area of 1,347 acres (5.45 km2 ). In recent years, approximately 1 % of 400,000 visitors a year make climbing primarily through traditional technical climbing .
