The Coober Pedy is a small town in Australia with a population of 3,500 residents. It is known for two reasons.
The first and most important is the opal, a type of precious rock that is found in abundance in the region. The mines of the region are responsible for 70% of world production opal. O second reason why the city is known Coober Pedy is the fact that most of the residents live below the ground. It is a habit that began in the early 20th century when the first miners who settled there, living in caves, mines to avoid the extreme summer temperatures of the Australian desert. Today, the habit has become a way of life for many them - permanent and non - residents of the city. With temperatures that are above ground usually reach the 40 vethmous Celsius (recorded and the temperature 47 degrees), many are choosing to build their homes under the ground, where conditions are more stable. There are construction companies in the region undertaken the creation of these underground homes, the cost is similar to the surface. There are also several museums, shops, churches and hotels, all under the ground.
